The Ministry of Science and Innovation has published a report on participation in the European Union’s R&D&I Framework Program Horizon 2020 (H2020), which shows Spain on the very top of the project leadership ranking.

According to the report, Spanish entities coordinate 17% of all collaborative projects, in addition to being the fourth country that receives the largest funding, just after Germany, the United Kingdom and France. Considering these achievements, which have been accomplished in a highly competitive environment under criteria of excellence, the Framework Program is one of the main sources of funding for competitive R&D&I in our country.

In this regard, among Spanish beneficiaries, companies obtain the largest subsidies, with 35.2% of funding, followed by universities, with 20.8%. The rest of the subsidies is distributed among research associations (12.3%), technology centers (11.3%), public research centers (11.3%), public administrations (5.5%), associations (3.4%) and European organizations (0.2%).

Nearly 12,500 entities have applied for the available funding, participating in 63,730 proposals. Out of them, 3,759 Spanish entities have obtained funding.

As the BISITE Research Group and the AIR Institute, we have already led more than 25 European projects, and are currently coordinating five projects funded through the H2020, Erasmus+ and POCTEP programs: Hippocampus Extracellular Space Simulator Project (HESSP), DISRUPTIVE, DIGITEC, SMARTSEA and FARMS4CLIMATE, the latter has been granted very recently. In addition, several of our projects are being developed thanks to cascade funding from the European Commission.
