Forests 4.0: Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things

Forests are part of our ecosystem, caring for them and protecting them should not be seen as an obligation, it is essential for our survival. Moreover, if we do it properly, we will be able to get even more out of them, in a safe, sustainable and efficient way. This week I joined other experts at the ” IoT Forests” conference, organized by the Institute for Business Competitiveness (ICE), the Cesefor Foundation, DIH Leaf and IoT Digital Innovation Hub with the aim of applying technological solutions and Internet of Things in the management of natural resources and biodiversity.

The technology we have at our disposal allows us to develop large-scale smart city projects, in the field of Industry, what we now call Industry 4.0, etc. All this technology, based on AI, IoT and Blockchain, is already in use in numerous urban, industrial and/or precision agriculture and livestock projects, and can be applied in our forests.

In addition, we have extraordinary communications networks that provide us with great services at low cost, and that can help us to develop projects with edge computing technology to sustainably improve the productivity of forest stands and guarantee the safety of both the forests and the operators. This is an area that has vast potential and much work still needs to be done to benefit forests and ourselves.
