Artificial Intelligence (AI) belongs to the discipline of engineering, becoming increasingly important in industrial, medical, social and day-to-day contexts. The range of application possibilities and the increasing number of success cases, combined with the current availability of data and sensing hardware, are fuelling the development of advanced systems. These innovative systems are capable of solving problems that seemed impossible to tackle some time ago. In this regard, AI could not be missing from the strategic plans for smart city development.

The application of AI in smart cities has had staggering results, which we will soon learn about at the International Conference on Sustainable Smart Cities and Territories (SSCt2021), held online from April 27 to 29, 2021.. The BISITE Group is one of the organizers of the conference, together with Texas A&M University in Qatar, the AIR Institute and the IoT Digital Innovation Hub. Specialists and researchers attending the event will discuss the latest scientific and technical advances in the fields of Smart Cities and Smart Territories.

Several activities will be held as part of SSCt2021, including a Workshop on the Applications of Artificial Intelligence Systems in Smart Cities (APAISC), which will present papers related to machine learning techniques, the implementation of hybrid systems, intelligent data analysis, applications of intelligent systems or Internet of Things applications among others.

The application of AI in smart cities offers many advantages for city development, such as predicting or detecting failures, simplifying repetitive tasks and providing advanced information to anticipate complex situations and propose solutions to future problems, in addition to making decisions based on real data. No doubt, the aforementioned factors are key elements of Smart Cities.
