Agreement between the University of Salamanca, the Polytechnic Institute of Oporto and the federal institutes of Brazil.

The University of Salamanca, the Polytechnic Institute of Oporto and the federal institutes of Brazil, a network comprising 500 centres of higher education with more than one million students, have reached an agreement to develop joint research programmes, allowing Portuguese and Brazilian students to pursue their doctorate in the Salamanca-based academic institution. Likewise, professors from these institutions in Portugal and Brazil can also participate in the doctorate programmes at USAL.

Vice Rector of Research and Technology Transfer of the University of Salamanca, Juan Manuel Corchado explained that the initiative is based on a collaborative effort with the polytechnic institutes of Portugal, whose students are already able to pursue their doctorates in the provincial capital city of Salamanca. This relationship has not only resulted in a shared objective with federal institutes in Brazil, but opens the doors to new possible collaborations among all parties, such as the possibility of developing research projects financed by the new European project Horizons 2020, or programmes funded by the Brazilian government oriented towards applied research.

“We would like to transform our Science Park into a hub of innovation in biotechnology, ICT, agrarian sciences, laser technology and Spanish language teaching, and Brazil is the perfect reference” affirms Corchado, because of the many resources the country is allocating to investigation.

Jerónimo Silva, Rector of the Federal Institute of Goiás pointed out that these agreements will not only benefit doctorate programmes, but that they also open the door to facilitating the mobility of researchers and scholars.

There is already an intense collaboration between Oporto and Salamanca in the field of informatics, as their respective institutions are currently participating in a European project on environmental intelligence. Moreover, they will launch a new initiative with the United States and Korea on intelligent electric networks, and expect the Brazilian researchers to join them in the near future.

Corchado ha sido presidente de la asociación IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics, y coordinador académico del Instituto Universitario de Investigación en Arte y Tecnología de la Animación de la Universidad de Salamanca e investigador en las Universidades de Paisley (UK), Vigo (Spain) y en el Plymouth Marine Laboratory (UK). En la actualidad compagina toda su actividad con la dirección de los programas de Máster en Seguridad, Animación Digital, Telefonía Movil, Dirección de Sistemas de Información, Internet de las Cosas, Social Media, Diseño e Impresión 3D, Blockchain, Z System, Industria 4.0, Gestión de Proyectos Ágiles y Smart Cities & Intelligent Buildings​, en la Universidad de Salamanca y su trabajo como editor jefe de las revistas ADCAIJ (Advances in Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence Journal), OJCST (Oriental Journal of Computer Science and Technology) o Electronics MDPI (Computer Science & Engineering section). J. M. Corchado desarrolla principalmente trabajos en proyectos relacionados con Inteligencia Artificial, Machine Learning, Blockchain, IoT, Fog Computing, Edge Computing, Smart Cities, Smart Grids y Análisis de sentimiento.
