Reasons to believe in the future of the University of Salamanca

Over the last few days, local, regional and national media have given us the opportunity to directly disseminate our proposals regarding the next six years at the University of Salamanca. I would like to thank them for not neglecting the importance of such a fundamental process at our University as is the change in the governing team and for allowing us to reach out to society with concrete messages.

Last weekend I answered the questions posed by journalist Estíbaliz Lera for the Diario de Castilla y León (El Mundo). In the interview I emphasised my deep commitment to the University of Salamanca and to the efficient and forward-looking management it deserves. We wish to provide the university community with the tools that each person needs to carry out their work efficiently and feel comfortable, as well as for students to feel proud of USAL and to be an active part of the decisions. We feel prepared to lead a modernisation project built by all of us, without leaving aside our historical legacy.

As is logical due to the circumstances of a single candidacy, questions about participation arise. Personally, I would like the university community to vote on 7 May, yes, but I would also like each member to vote sincerely, out of enthusiasm for the project. This is what we are seeing during our visits to the different centres and services, which are particularly useful in terms of gathering suggestions for the programme. We are seeing the involvement and desire for a common project and we want both the members of the USAL and society to be happy with the proposal.

With regard to training, I assured the Diario de Castilla y León that we are seeking to transform the campuses into multi-purpose spaces for teaching, research, culture and coexistence. The idea is clear: to create new spaces and improve existing ones. We need to listen to the demands of our students in order to adapt the academic offer, so we believe that a more practical approach is appropriate. We wish to achieve this transformation through a consensual and inclusive process that involves all the University’s groups. In this regard, we are going to create a large, comprehensive student care centre, where students will receive all the information and help they need. And a fundamental point will be to improve internships, so that everyone will have the opportunity to receive practical training that is remunerated.

Finally, I would like to emphasise, as I did in the interview, the unquestionable idea that investment in the University of Salamanca is an insurance policy. Our Studio is a machine that generates talent and resources for society, every euro that comes in is multiplied and we have more than enough reasons to apply for more funding and take the significant leap forward that we are aiming for.

I would like to thank the Diario de Castilla y León for the interview, which you can read in full here.
